In times of recession it’s easy to believe that there are people out there willing to give you a leg up.  If you’ve lost your job through redundancy you may be feeling a little dejected. You might be thinking that it’s time you set up on your own, maybe work from home.

The internet has hundreds of pages of information about working from home and with a clear head you should be able to spot the genuine opportunities.  But when you’re desperate and the job applications offer one rejection after another, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s real.

Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Bill George today called for more energy and activism by all in 2010 to come closer to fulfilling Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision of economic and social justice for all.

"Dr. King's vision included not only civil rights but also economic and social justice for all Americans – a vision that is far from fulfilled. We can step closer to reaching that goal by making jobs the top priority for Pennsylvania this year," Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Bill George declared.  "We can make real progress in climbing out of this recession in 2010 if we stand together under the banner of Jobs Now!"

Pat Robertson, the American Christian televangelist and host of "The 700 Club," said that Haitians need to have a "great turning to god" while he was reporting on the devastating 7.0 earthquake that shook the island nation - the most powerful to hit the country in a century.

As Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said "well over" 100,000 people may have died in the natural disaster, Robertson took to the airwaves Wednesday on his show and said that the country has been "cursed by one thing after another" since they "swore a pact to the devil."

"I have not slept yet. The second house that I grew up in was down, and some relatives have died, from what I have been told," Jean-Louis said Wednesday. "I haven't been able to reach my parents. I have heard that they are OK, but I do not know what is going on around them."

Oprah Winfrey, Ben Stiller and Paris Hilton are among a list of celebrities who have urged for the support of survivors of the earthquake in Haiti, reports Associated Press.

"It seems like across the wide spectrum of artists and people in the music industry and the movie industry and everything else, people are kind of joining together to help in whatever manner that they can," Blink-182 bassist-vocalist Mark Hoppus told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Musician Wyclef Jean, who was born in Haiti, is asking for help. In a statement, he describes the 7.0 earthquake that hit the country yesterday as a tragedy and human disaster, and says the 2 million people in Port-au-Prince are facing the catastrophe alone.

"We must act now," he urges.

In addition to the U.S. government, he is calling on the international community to help. Jean says anyone who is interested can text "Yele" to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill), or you can visit www.Yele.org and click on DONATE.
