Botched circumcision doctor suspended

DoctorA doctor who left a baby boy with a 'very abnormal' penis after botching a circumcision was suspended for six months.
Anthonipillai Nicholas-Pillai was 'shivering and sweating' as he performed the operation on the four month old baby at his north London surgery.

The doctor then lied to cover up his blunder, the General Medical Council found.

A Fitness to Practise Panel heard a 22-week old Muslim boy was left with "two tone" genitals as a result of the operation in April 2001 at the Bush Hill Park Medical Centre in Enfield, Middlesex.

When his Somali parents complained about the operation, the doctor refused to release the baby's medical notes.

He finally handed them over six months later but they contained "inaccuracies".

Branding the doctor "dishonest" the panel found he tried to mislead the parents' lawyers.

And his evidence to the panel was "inconsistent and contradictory", panel chairman Dr Roger Ferguson said.

Imposing the sanction, he said: "The panel considers it necessary to mark the seriousness with which it views your dishonest conduct by directing that your registration be suspended.

"In terms of the length of suspension to be imposed the panel has taken into account the fact that your dishonest misconduct, whilst serious, related to a single incident that has not been repeated recently, and is out of character."

He added: "Your conduct was below the standard to be expected of a reasonably competent medical practitioner," he said.
