Mary Seacole to get statue

Mary Seacole will finally be publically recognised next year when her statue is erected in Central London.

After a five year campaign Westminster council has given the go ahead for the memorial for the Jamaican nurse who helped British soldiers in the Crimean war.

The memorial will celebrate the life and work of the self taught nurse, herbalist and businesswoman who made her own way to the Crimea in 1854, where she set up a rest, refreshment and nursing post for troops near Sebastopol.

But she was sensationally left out of the Crimean War Memorial in London

Now the Mary Seacole Memorial Appeal Trust urging black businesses to donate towards the costs of creating the statue.
