Nelson Mandela home after hospital stay

Nelson Mandela was released from a South African hospital a day after officials said the ailing anti-apartheid icon underwent a keyhole examination for an abdominal ailment.

“The doctors have assured us that there is nothing to worry about and that Madiba is in good health,” President Jacob Zuma said in a statement earlier, referring to the 93-year-old Mandela by his affectionate clan name.

The news comes as relief to the entire nation.

“It was a diagnostic exercise that they wanted to carry out to determine what’s causing the abdominal complaints and he has been discharged and he’s now resting at home,” said spokesman Keith Khoza.

Mandela has been in poor health since suffering respiratory problems last year and no longer makes public appearances. But he remains a national figurehead nonetheless.
