Yasus Afaru is back in the UK for Black History Season

Examples of presentation events are:

“Black History is Our Shared History”

  • an opportunity for Jamaican Rastafarian poet Yasus Afari to introduce his perspective on Black History and our shared responsibilities, with time for questions and reasoning, followed by performance poetry and music. 

"YASUS AFARI and friends"

  • an event which introduces Yasus Afari and local poets, which could include students showcasing their work, followed by performance poetry and music.

Examples of workshops for young people

Caribbean History, Language and Culture

  • Workshops around the work coming out of the Black History research of the Bi-Centenary Year, with opportunities to focus on the development and history of Jamaican and other Caribbean Languages and to look at the
    African language links.

“Overstanding” Rastafari

  • Workshops for groups to learn about and overstand (understand) the development and history of the Rastafarian Faith and the positive principles of Rastafarian Livity. (This links with the new RE Approved
    Syllabus and is based on his book "Overstanding Rastafari")

Reggae Workshops

  • Opportunities to work with Yasus Afari, the “Dance Hall Baptist”, to explore the roots of reggae, the styles and their development, as well as Yasus’ recording ventures.

“Poetry for 21st Century”

  • Workshops to get groups to think again about poetry as a powerful medium of expression – as a full time poet and performer, Yasus introduces his work on environmental issues and personal writing.
